Strength in Unity: How Taekwondo Builds Resilience Amidst National Debates in May 2025

Finding Strength Through Taekwondo

On May 1, 2025, I’m reflecting on how Taekwondo has been a source of strength for my family amidst national debates, like the ongoing immigration crackdown that’s been in the news since Judge Hannah Dugan’s arrest on April 25. At Empowerkickstudio.com, my friend Marlon and I (Minkie) share an empowering “Em” connection, and his house call Taekwondo services in Pasadena are helping families build resilience through fitness and focus.

The Current Climate

The Trump administration’s immigration policies, including executive orders targeting sanctuary cities and a White House mugshot display on April 28, have created a tense atmosphere. In South Pasadena, where I live, families are feeling the impact—some of Adele’s classmates are worried about their parents’ immigration status. As a mom, I want to help Adele stay strong and grounded, which is why her Taekwondo classes this month (and my own session this morning from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM) have been so valuable.

Taekwondo’s Role in Resilience

Marlon’s house call sessions in Pasadena are perfect for families looking to channel stress into strength. A 45-minute session burns around 200 calories, per the American Council on Exercise, and teaches kids and adults alike how to focus and persevere. A 2023 study from the American Psychological Association found that martial arts can reduce anxiety in children by 20%, and I’ve seen this with Adele—she’s more confident and calm since starting her classes. Marlon’s teaching style, inspired by our visit to Prestige Martial Arts in La Habra, embodies the “Em” energy we share, empowering families to face challenges together.

A Family Activity for Summer

With Adele’s summer break starting June 5, 2025, Marlon’s sessions are a great way to keep her active while she also attends her school’s summer program (chess, reading, and math). Taekwondo aligns with our “healthy body, healthy mind, wealthy energy” philosophy, offering a “work hard, play hard” activity that builds both physical and mental strength. It’s a way to stay united as a family, even amidst national tensions.
